Surprise! The new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door’s interior is dominated by screens

Mercedes-AMG is preparing a fully electric GT-style four-door performance coupe called the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. Snappy title, likely head-snapping performance, if the Concept AMG GT XX that previewed it is anything to go by.

And today, we learn the inside of this shiny, electric AMG is absolutely dominated by screens. Two of them. No, three of them, if you tick an option box. One’s a 10.2in instrument cluster for the driver, then comes a 14in multimedia screen.

That’s there to handle all of the AMG’s multimedia functions, angled slightly towards the driver for “optimum readability and intuitive operation”. Then comes a third screen – optional – for the passenger, measuring 14in and there to allow “the front passenger to immerse themselves in the sporty digital experience”.

Interestingly, despite ‘dominating’ the dashboard, these screens take second billing in AMG’s literature, because what it’s focused on are the three rotary dials that change the 4-Door Coupe’s dynamics.‘Response Control’ is there to adjust how the electric motors respond to accelerator inputs, ‘Agility Control’ changes the car’s cornering behaviour, while ‘Traction Control’ changes the setting of the sunroof. Kidding! It is of course a nine-stage slip control setting.

Speaking of much slip, the seats are specially bolstered for lateral support during what AMG describes as “dynamic cornering”, there’s a special AMG steering wheel with buttons, “comfortable” and “contoured” rear seats tailored for two (or the option for three), and – yes – a switchable panoramic glass roof.

So if you want to block out the sun, you can turn the roof into a giant advert for the company you’ve just bought your car from. Outside that, it’s what you’d expect from a luxury, expensive and likely extraordinarily powerful Mercedes. Diamond quilting. Posh lights. A world of optional materials and trims.

Speaking of much performance, we don’t yet know what AMG’s cooking up for this 4-Door, but the GT XX concept (below) landed with a 1,340bhp, tri-motor thud. That concept – which of course previewed this new arrival – got 800V architecture, stupendously fast-charging, and a stupendously fast top speed of 223mph.

Hopefully, the new production car will get a stupendous soundtrack, too. Late last year, AMG boss Michael Schiebe told TopGear.com the 4-Door will come with a fake V8 soundtrack (along with fake gearshifts, too).

“We have a very strong history and heritage with our V8s,” he said. “You know, one man to one engine, the sound etc. This is why at the very beginning of the development of the AMG.EA architecture we already thought that we need to have great sound and a combustion-like drive mode.”
